Tom Savini’s Special Make-Up Effects Program
Earn your degree in special make-up effects in just two years at Douglas Education Center. If you have a passion for creativity, now you can have an outlet to turn your most complex ideas into reality. Established in October 2000 by the “Godfather of Gore” himself, students have the chance to learn from Tom Savini, a pioneer in the special make-up effects industry. Savini is most well-known for his unique perspective on how special make-up effects can change the course of the horror genre.
Savini has worked closely with George A. Romero for years, and that relationship continues through our creative programs. Students have the chance to team up with George A. Romero’s Filmmaking Program to bring their craziest, most innovative ideas to life. Here, students learn to work efficiently with other filmmaking roles to ensure everyone’s vision comes across on the screen while maintaining time management and strict deadlines. In addition, students gain experience in a diverse range of basics in special make-up effects, including the following and more:
- Creating the perfect camera-ready looks
- Airbrushing techniques
- Prosthetic application

George A. Romero’s Filmmaking Program
Everyone has a story to tell, and you can bring yours to the big screen with George A. Romero’s filmmaking program. Earn your associates in filmmaking with our intensive, 16-month curriculum. Students learn collaboration skills with many individuals throughout the filmmaking process, including special make-up effects artists, sound creators, video editors, and more. Through in-class exercises, real filmmaking experience, and video teachings from George A. Romero himself, students can develop understanding and first-hand practice of every aspect of filmmaking from directing to post-production.
We use the most advanced filmmaking equipment available to keep students updated on the most recent advancements in the film industry. We also equip our classroom with the tools and resources needed to turn it into a real film studio. Students have the opportunity to work in a real sound stage, make-up room, post-production facility, theater, and more. In addition, our program allows students to work with instructors who have experience in the film industry and network with professionals to get their names out there even before graduation.
