Douglas Education Center and the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland-Fayette, Inc Partner to Work with Local Youth

Douglas Education Center (DEC), in conjunction with the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland-Fayette, Inc., hosted a Vocational Training and Drug Prevention Program through a grant from the Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board. The students involved are residents of Monessen and the Mon Valley region. Brennan Aldrich, Kendrick Blackman, Chanel Bristol, Kyla Davis, Makayla Davis, David Diggs, Caitlin Frost, Marcel Taylor and Tyler Yuille took part in the skills training program.

“The overall objective of this program is to make an impact in the lives
of young people by bringing to light issues in the community and utilizing the talents and education offered at Douglas Education Center and the programs of the Private Industry Council ,” said Sean Sypolt, Vice President of Education and Workforce Development Private Industry Council of Westmoreland-Fayette, Inc.

During the 9-week program, students were introduced to SBIRT drug and alcohol awareness and prevention training. They were also offered the opportunity to learn film production skills that include shooting, sound, and editing. In addition, they took part in hands-on professional skills training by being placed in various local businesses to obtain appropriate work experiences.

On Wednesday, May 4th at 6:00pm in the Van Keulen Building, Douglas Education Center will host an event where the public and community leaders have been invited to view the finished product the Youth Program students created during the filming portion of the program. After filming interviews over several days, the students then edited them to create six one-minute public service announcements. Click here to view videos.
