Scholarships Equal Money for School
If you’re looking for ways to help fund your educational dreams your help might be right in front of you the whole time. Did you know that Douglas Education Center offers Institutional Scholarships? DEC gave away over 30 scholarships last year alone totaling around $117,000!
For many students what stands between their dream of attending a program like the Tom Savini’s Special Make-Up Effects program and the reality of attending it is the money. That’s where scholarships can be an enormous source of help. Whether you need to cover a gap or give yourself some extra spending money scholarships can mean the difference between attending school now or having to wait a while and save some money.
The best part about scholarships is that there is literally something for everyone. Federal financial aid comes with qualifications; you must meet certain requirements to qualify for certain types of aid whereas scholarships come with a whole different set of requirements that vary from scholarship to scholarship.
Scholarships are like rewards for your talents and passions. Something that financial aid applications don’t have a spot for. If you have the time and energy to find and apply for scholarships, you could be rewarded with money for school that doesn’t have to be borrowed or repaid.
To explain the difference between Institutional Scholarships and Non-Institutional Scholarships. Institutional scholarships are awards provided by the school you are attending. DEC offers a total of five different types of Institutional Scholarships for each type of program.

Everything else is considered a Non-Institutional Scholarship. This might be a scholarship you win from your bowling team in high school or a scholarship from your local Elks Lodge. You can use special scholarship search engines to find scholarships you could potentially be eligible for or you can use the regular search engines and search for specific types of scholarships such as scholarships for cosmetology students or scholarships for people who are left-handed.
To make things easy for DEC students, the Financial Aid office has complied a page on our website totally dedicated to scholarships. We list applications for our Institutional Scholarships along with some applications for Non-Institutional scholarships we partner with.
It’s important to remember when looking for Non-Institutional Scholarships that whoever is offering the scholarship; whether it is a person, business, charitable organization or government agency, they set the terms and conditions of the award. While DEC doesn’t put any restrictions on what type of scholarships students can use the entity offering the scholarship might require that the funding is used at a four-year university or in a certain state other than Pennsylvania so be on the lookout for things like that when researching scholarships.
Also, financial aid and scholarships are all about finding money for school so if any website or person asks you for a fee in exchange for your application then walk away. There are no fees for applying for financial aid or scholarships.
